Angle your pieces..

Postby Archerm » Thu Jan 28, 2016 8:11 pm

Hey everyone,
Remembering a tip that has been mentioned here in the past I decided to give it a try on a few pieces. Both Emil and Mark have mentioned tilt the model some for a better finish. This makes a lot of sense. I will have to agree after printing a few pieces this way over the past few days. You can really see how smooth the finish is on these pieces. I think keeping as many parallel surfaces slightly angled to the build table helps very much with a smooth build. Larger heavier rings tilted between 30and 45 degrees and lighter rings tilted at 20 degrees or so seems to print a excellent surface finish. Large flat surfaces at any angle other than parallel prints better as well.
Some pieces might require more supports but some areas are easier to build supports on. Don't forget to make sure your supports enter the model as close to 90degrees as possible for better geometry.

Excellent! Yes, angling the prints is a good idea, as long as it doesn't introduce too many overhangs, especially on the edges.

How do you clean so many supports off neatly?

If you cure them with the supports and clip them about 1/10 of a mm or so away from the model they clean up pretty easy. The trick is to put them where they can be cleaned up easily.

With fully cured prints you can sand and polish them before casting.
