Skin/flash layers stuck to print

Postby Ben @ Mastercrafted » Thu Sep 20, 2018 12:38 pm

Hi.
I've sometimes been getting a 'skin' attached to prints, similar to what the user 'sprue' has detailed here. Usually, this is thin and doesn't seem to affect the overall print quality.
Yesterday, however, it was very bad. Thick enough to be rigid, and there are some bad layers in the print. You should be able to see in the photos.
I also noticed a clicking sound (also reported here) when the bed was lifting. This was the first time I've heard this, and it was not for the full duration. Could the print be sticking to the FEP?
•This print was the first on a new FEP sheet.
•I stirred the SolusProto and shook it very thoroughly.
•The resin is a few months old, and I'm down to the last quarter of the bottle, but I have seen this problem intermittently since quite early on.
•This was sliced with Contour v1.9.38 Beta, I've updated to 2.0 and will be reprinting today.

Thanks for your help.

Download the latest beta. It has an updated profile for SolusProto that allows you to lower the intensity slider. Lower it gradually and test with something small until you have no more flashing layers like those and until you're happy with the improved print quality.

I did another print yesterday, and it seems fine (phone-camera today though).

I was careful to tighten the thumbscrews only a little, and shook the resin for even longer - this time with an acrylic die in the bottle as a mixing-aid. I also cleaned the underside of the FEP, as it seemed to have a greasy residue on it.
I will try lowering the intensity and see how that affects the prints.
Many thanks :)

That greasy residue is most likely resin. You need to get it off. If your vat sticks, it's still dirty. It should move on the quartz easy.

I was surprised to see the light from the projector was blue with the intensity set to 6, down from 7. Prints came out very well, so I'll stick with this unless I see more of the same problem. Thanks.

Glad to hear it's working well for you Ben.

Have you tried the gray resin yet?

I have it sat by my desk, and I'll use it on the next batch of miniatures for GCT's Bushido game. Working through the last few ml of the Proto for my store stuff.
I also picked up a sample bottle of the Wax. The makerspace where I have my desk doesn't have casting facilities yet, though.
