Scale models

Postby nzfinescale » Mon May 30, 2016 11:14 am

Hi Everyone

For something completely different here are some of my first prints.

These are 25/25 in SolusProto. Prints are uncured (uv box arrived today), and the poor fit to the boiler is due to insufficient supports (now fixed).

The smokebox door is 14.5mm across and was printed flat at 12.5micron to remove layering - other parts are 25 micron Z. These parts will be printed in Emerald and cast for the final model.

Has this changed my modelling? You bet!

For those interested this is 1:64 ('S' scale) 3'6" gauge. Track is therefore HO/16.5mm. Wheel castings, truck axleboxes/springs and valve gear are all cast from RP patterns (3DSystems). The rest of the locomotive is photo-etched nickel silver sheet. There is still a way to go on this project.

Thanks for the feedback.

I use a third party caster. It's always referred to as brass, but in fact is a bronze alloy of some sort. The castings visible in the pictures show the material. Some use nickel silver, which i would like to try, but i don't have a supplier locally who provides this.

Awesome work!! What is the thinnest wall you can print with the solus? I'm looking at buying one when I move back to NZ for NZ120 bits and pieces and anything else. I wanna try fine detailing. Thanks for the share of your prints. I hope to get some test prints done depending on price sometime before I get the printer.

I have printed supports as small as .015 mm. You can see them on this ring. I use them as bridges instead of using big heavy supports in hard to clean up areas of the model.

Thanks for the reply... If you were to print a open box what is the minimum wall thickness say 20mm x 20mm thanks in advance.

I think it depends on what you are casting the models in. 1mm should work just fine.
