Help with castng

Okay, I am using plasticast, did a good burnout and this is what I got. Part of the top is perfect, the other side is not. I also cast a filigree head and it didnt come out at all. Should I go back to r and r untravest maxx. I measured, weighed did everything I was supposed to. Len

Hi Len,

Can you post your burnout cycle?
Also how are you curing the piece?

Looks like a fault with both.

Make sure you are curing that thick ring under UV light for at least 2-3 hours, rotating it to get all the sides. Then cure it with heat for another 1.5-2 hours at 200-250f.

For the burnout, make sure you are soaking/holding at 1350f for at least 2 hours to make sure every bit of it burned.

Are you vacuuming the flask before casting? That helps a lot with getting rid of the ash.

Ok I got this from ed who was referred to me by Chris Sr stuller.
Cure the piece with a lizard light for an hour and a half, turning once. Start investing with plasticast and turn on the oven.
Run oven as follows
ramp to 800 for 1.5hours
Then bring it to 1450 for 2.5 hours then lower and soak st CaSTING temp for an hour.
Ed only waits 20_25 minutes to put flask in oven. Usually when the oven is at 200 on the way up.
I have not had a failed cast yet. Len

A buddy Matt G from Michiagn was saying to mist 2 coat of Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel paint over the piece before casting to help improve the results.

Has anyone tried this with noticeable improvements or better consistent results?

Yes, Todd. A Solus owner here in LA tipped me to that. Seems to work great.

My guess is that the paint burns off a lot sooner than the resin giving room for expansion and leaving a smooth surface in the investment.

Full Ramp means that you go from one temperature to another as fast as your kiln will go.
Same burn out should work for all gold karats. Platinum will be different if your casting machine can handle it.
There are some burn out schedules posted. Different kilns work better than others, so you will see some variance in schedules. May have to tweak a little.
